The Skill We’re Slowly Losing

My friend recently told me that her 19-year-old daughter does not like communicating with customers on the phone. She despises it. She’d rather be doing cardio at 4am.

And in this generation… she’s not alone.

We’re living in a time where communication has become more convenient, but also more distant. Texting, messaging, emailing—these allow us to interact without tone, without emotion, and without having to fully engage.

So when it comes time to actually exchange words with a person, it can feel overwhelming.

Because real communication requires presence.

It requires thinking on the spot.
Smiling.
Laughing.
Eye contact.
Reading tone.
Responding with clarity.

And we all know… dealing with people isn’t always easy.

But avoiding communication doesn’t make it easier. It makes it harder.

The less we practice real conversations, the more intimidating they become.

Talking on the phone may seem small… but it’s a skill.
And like any skill, it only improves when you use it.

I’ll take a phone call.
I’ll take a face-to-face conversation.

But talking to automation?

Now that’s the real scare.
